Fixing in the Future

So the rats are creating some real problems.  I suppose I should have expected some big differences between one female rat and two boys. My little girl had a unique smell to her that seemed to remain mostly in her cage. It was odd, but not offensive and it didn't take over my room. The boys, on the other hand, absolutely REEK! My entire room smells like their cage and it is disgusting. It gets worse as you go across the room toward the cage. Last night I cleaned out the entire cage. Less than an hour later, I could smell them! I can't even begin to keep up with them.

I've wanted to get them fixed since I got them. At their vet check up I asked about it and was given a written estimate, as always. I glanced over the paper and nearly hit the floor. They wanted $300 each!! Are they out of their minds?? The rats cost me 15 bucks for the both of them. My rabbits' spays were cheaper than that and their surgeries were INTERNAL!!

The smell from their marking is getting so overwhelming, and with their constant fighting, I was ready to give them up. I've never done that. When I take on the responsibility of an animal, I hold onto that responsibility for the entirety of that animals life. It makes me sad that they are causing me more frustration than enjoyment at this point. I finally called the shelter I got them from. They only fix cats and dogs there, but I asked for a recommendation for somewhere to take them.

I called the animal hospital they suggested. Turns out this place only charges $90 to neuter rats! Victory!! I think that's a much more reasonable price. I can get them both done for about half of what I would have paid at their current vet. I just wish I hadn't already paid for a visit. This new place will want to see them before they schedule the surgeries. Ugh. Oh well. At least I don't have to make a decision between spending $600 or giving them up.
